Buridan’s Solution to the Liar Paradox

چکیده

Jean Buridan has offered a solution to the Liar Paradox, i.e., to the problem of assigning a truth-value to the sentence “What I am saying is false.” It has been argued that this solution is either 1) ad hoc since it would only apply to self-referencing sentences (Read 2002 ), or else 2) weakens his theory of truth, making his “a logic without truth” (Klima 2008, Dutilh Novaes 2011 ). Against 1), I will argue that Buridan’s solution by means of truth by supposition does not involve new principles. Self-referential sentences force us to handle supposition more carefully, which does not warrant the accusation of adhoccery. I will also argue, against 2), that it is exaggerated to assert that this solution leads to a “weakened” theory of truth, since it is consistent with other passages of the Sophismata, which only gives necessary conditions for the truth of affirmative propositions, but sufficient conditions for falsity.

Liar Paradox and Substitution into Intensional Contexts

John Barker, in two recent essays, raises a variety of intriguing criticisms to challenge my interpretation of the liar paradox and the type of solution I propose in ‘Denying the Liar’ and ‘Denying the Liar Reaffirmed.’ Barker continues to believe that I have misunderstood the logical structure of the liar sentence and its expression, and that as a result my solution misfires. I shall try to sh...

Undeniably Paradoxical: Reply to Jacquette

Can we solve the Liar paradox by simply declaring Liar sentences to be false? That is the proposal of Dale Jacquette in (Jacquette, 2007). The Liar paradox arises because apparently we can derive a contradiction from the assumption that the Liar sentence is true, and we can also derive a contradiction from the assumption that it is false. Jacquette argues that the former reasoning (i.e., the de...

The Liar in Context

About twenty-five years ago, Charles Parsons published a paper that began by asking why we still discuss the Liar Paradox. Today, the question seems all the more apt. In the ensuing years we have seen not only Parsons’ work (1974), but seminal work of Saul Kripke (1975), and a huge number of other important papers. Too many to list. Surely, one of them must have solved it! In a way, most of the...

A Kripkean Solution to Paradoxes of Denotation

Kripke’s solution to the Liar Paradox and other paradoxes of truth (1975) is generalized to the paradoxes of denotation. Berry’s Paradox and Hilbert and Bernays’ Paradox are treated in detail.

Semantic defectiveness and the liar

In this paper, we do two things. First, we provide some support for adopting a version of the meaningless strategy with respect to the liar paradox, and, second, we extend that strategy, by providing, albeit tentatively, a solution to that paradox—one that is semantic, rather than logical.
